Fixed flange towbars

This is the standard type of towbar in the UK. The best-known maker of flange towbars is Witter, the UK’s largest towbar manufacturer. This system allows different types of towball to be fitted. The flange system also allows for accessories to be fitted between the towbar and the towball including stabilisers, cycle carriers, tow steps or bumper protector plates

Swan neck towbars

These towbars come with either a welded or bolt-on neck. Instead of the neck of the towbar ending in a flange plate, the neck turns straight into the ball. The main disadvantage is the need for an expensive and intrusive adapter. Also, bumper protector plates, tow steps and pins and balls cannot be fitted onto this.

Detachable towbars

This type uses three balls that hold it secure in the housing, without any play or wear. This ensures total safety, yet easy operation and the highest level of comfort. The tow-ball is inserted horizontally into its housing and secured by means of a metal nut. The nut is secured by means of a leg spring.

A number of different types of towbar electrical connections are in use in the UK today and it depends on what you are towing and the electrics of the vehicle you are towing with. The types include:

We were looking for a towbar suitable for our car with parking sensors and a reverse camera. Most quotes were around the £800 mark as others were adamant we needed a detachable with dedicated wiring. Got in contact with 1st Choice Windscreens & Towbars, who are specialists in Hyundais, who assured me that with my age car and sensors, I would only need a swan neck with universal fitting. Managed to get it sorted for half of the price. Friendly knowledgeable staff and are not in for money grabbing and clearly just want happy customers. Still yet to buy our trailer and give it the true test. Otherwise, customer service is 10/10. Would recommend, and got it sorted in a good time frame.
